A new pocket park is reviving childhood favorites—like hopscotch, foursquare, and tetherball—offering both nostalgia for adults and active play for kids in NW Goldberg.
NW Goldberg Cares is planning a third-generation pocket park—Retro Play Park—set to breathe new life into a vacant lot with classic childhood games. The 6,175 sq ft site at Marquette will feature four-square courts, tetherball poles, hopscotch grids, custom seating by Detroit’s Donut Shop, and local art from Ghostbeard. As the seventh project in the “20 by ’25” initiative, this park reflects the group’s strategy of blending nostalgia, play, and inclusion.
Funded through MEDC’s Public Spaces grant and a $25,000 crowdfunding campaign, the project highlights youth development, intergenerational connection, and neighborhood cohesion. It’s a playful yet purposeful addition to the growing network of strategic public spaces in NW Goldberg.
