NW Goldberg Cares Aims to Create 20 Parks by 2025

NW Goldberg Cares, under the leadership of founder Daniel A. Washington, has embarked on an ambitious mission titled “20 by ’25.” The goal is to create 20 public green spaces in Detroit’s NW Goldberg neighborhood by December 31, 2025. This initiative aims to revitalize the area by converting vacant lots into themed pocket parks that serve as hubs for community engagement and enrichment.

Each park is thoughtfully designed with a unique theme and purpose:

  • Art Park: The organization’s first park, established in 2019, transformed an overgrown lot into a space celebrating artistic expression, featuring public art installations and a Little Free Library.

  • Holland Maze Literacy Park: Inspired by Detroit Future City’s Holland Maze blueprint, this park offers summer literacy programs for children amidst a tulip garden maze.

  • Rest & Ride Park: Located at a bus stop, this park provides seating and play elements, including musical instruments and climbing structures, catering to both commuters and children.

  • Spotlight Park: Funded by FOX Entertainment, this park features a circular stage for performances, landscaping, and public art, fostering community-led events.

Upcoming projects include Curtis Jones Park, named after a local basketball legend, which will feature a basketball court, walking path, pavilion, and children’s play area. Washington emphasizes the importance of not just creating physical spaces but also ensuring they are activated with meaningful programming that brings value to the community.
