NW Goldberg Cares has successfully converted a vacant lot at 6134 15th Street into the Holland Maze Literacy Park, a vibrant community space designed to promote child literacy in Detroit. This transformation was made possible through the support of Detroit Future City’s “Working with Lots” program, which provided essential guidance on land use and design. The park now hosts the “Reading in the Holland Maze” program, offering a unique environment for children to engage with literature.
Daniel A. Washington, founder and president of NW Goldberg Cares, emphasized the significance of this initiative:
“The working with lots program was instrumental in us developing our pocket park initiative across our neighborhood,” said Washington. “The staff insight and ability to help us understand how to maximize land was needed as we converted blighted property to vibrant, usable space.”
